What are the signs and symptoms that warrant medical clearance before exercise?
Pain/discomfort in neck/chest/jaw/arms Shortness of breath (dyspnea) Orthopnea (dyspnea in reclined position) dizziness or syncope Ankle edema Palpitations or tachycardia claudication (pain/cramping in lower extremities) Unusual fatigue
What effect might a beta blocker have on an individual and how should the PT evaluate their exercise?
reduce HR; use RPE
What effect do calcium channel blockers have on the body?
Lower blood pressure
What effect do angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors have on the body?
Block an enzyme that prevents formation of a blood vessel constricting hormone; lower blood pressure
What do bronchodilators do?
Increase exercise capabilities in those limited by bronchocontriction (asthma) but have little effect on HR
What effect do cold medications have on exercise?
May cause drowsiness or an increase in BP/ heart rate but usually are taken in low doses and have little effect on exercise.
What effect might nicotine replacement therapy have on heart rate?
Increases it
