What is the Internet?
Public, global network. It is a gateway.
From a physical stand point, it is a massive amount of cabling for public use.
What is the Intranet?
Cabling that companies lease (pay by month).
Internal, private network.
Highspeed cabling that directly connects one part of a company to another.
What is highspeed cabling made off?
Fiber Optic. Glass.
Used between central offices.
Describe how a private network (intranet) could be created between an office in New York and Tokyo?
Strange about calling that a private data network?
Just need a high-speed line from offices to closest central offices – put computer devices on each end (routers, etc) – can get to offices directly.
Telecommunications will set up connection, open phone call 24 hours a day to do what you want with it. Use it as a network.
Technically not private. Using public infrastructure to build private network.

What does Verizon do to give St. Joe’s high-speed Internet access?
Verizon brings a high-speed cable from the central office in Patchogue and the campus people plug in computer devices on their end.
Difference between global/private networks?
Allocated for different things.
How are internets and intranets prevented from intertwining?
Firewalls
What is a firewall?
Hardware and software placed between an organization’s internal network and external network to prevent outsiders from invading private networks.
