Ch 14 Text/Questions Flashcards
What is project management?
Refers to the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to achieve specific targets within specified budget and time constraints
What is scope?
Defines what work is or is not included in a project
List the steps of a project plan.
- Constraints
- List major milestones
- List detailed tasks
- Put start/end dates for every milestone and task
- Put cost for every single task
- Enter who is responsible for each task
- Identify dependencies
What are constraints? Provide examples.
Money and time (budget)
Ex. Building a house – land is already purchased
$400,000 and 9 months
What are major milestones? Provide examples.
Ex. Building a house
- Foundation, framing, roofing
- Exterior walls, windows, doors
- Electrical, plumbing, HVAC
- Interior walls and floors
- Kitchens and bathrooms
- Painting and any finishing work
What are detailed tasks? Provide examples.
May have 40 tasks in a certain area - So many sets of workers come in to build a home (at least 20)
Bids and contracts
Get building permits
Ex. Building a house
- Clear the land, dig the foundation, poor basement concrete
- Purchase/bring windows over, installation, locks
- Electricians, plumbers, heating and ac workers
- Floor guy
- Tile guy
- Painter
What are start/end dates? Provide examples.
Microsoft Project starts to create timelines (first look empty) all the way out until the end date
What are the costs for every single task?
Material and labor costs
Should end up less than what was budgeted - $400,00 in this case
Who is responsible for each task? Provide examples.
Contracting companies, electricians, etc. as well as backups
Why is it important to identify dependencies?
Major milestones are dependent on the ones before them
Define which tasks must be done before the other ones – that way you know which tasks can be moved around and which cant
What is scope creep?
Adding on a whole bunch of additional tasks that were not in the contract
Mechanism in place to say any additional work will be charged
Document every single thing
Handle additional scope – document, communicate it, agreement, (push out project 2 days, etc.)
