CH 7 - Energy Flashcards
Energy
Universe is made up of energy and matter. Matter is substance and energy is what moves the substance.
Work
Work is defined by the relationship force x distance.
W = F*d
If the point of application of the force does not move?
No work is done.
Power
Power is the amount of work done per time and is measured by lb ft/s or W (Watt)
Mechanical Energy
Energy enables objects to do work
Mechanical energy has two common forms.
Potential Energy
Potential Energy is the energy stored in an object by virtue of its position that is available to create motion.
Potential energy is not dependent on the path taken.
Potential Energy Formula
PE = mgh
Kinetic Energy
Kinetic Energy is the energy associated with motion.
Kinetic Energy Formula
KE = ½ mv2
Work-Energy Theorem
Work represents the change in energy.
Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it may be transformed from one form into another, but the total amount of energy never changes
Kinetic energy allows?
Allows you to move
Potential energy is where?
Where an object is positioned
Gravity =
potential energy
Accerleration
m x a = force
Height =
potential energy
Distance
force x distance = work
distance = work
