CH 2 - Newton's 1st Law of Motion Flashcards
Aristotle’s idea of motion
Natural motion
Any object not in its proper place will strive to get there.
Natural motion moves
Straight up or straight down for all things on Earth.
Violent motion
Produced by external pushes or pulls on objects.
Force
A push or a pull.
Measured in units of Newtons (N)
1 N = 1 kg∙m/s2
Inertia
A property of matter to resist changes in motion.
depends on the amount of matter in an object (its mass).
Vector quantity
A quantity whose description requires both magnitude (how much?) and direction (which way?)
Scalar quantity
magnitude only (e.g. mass, volume, speed, etc.)
net force is the combination of
all forces that change an object’s state of motion.
The Equilibrium Rule
The vector sum of forces acting on a non-accelerating object = zero
Support force
an upward force on an object that is opposite to the force of gravity.
Static equilibrium
at rest; not moving
Dynamic equilibrium
constant velocity
