Ch. 7 Flashcards

Q
Where does photosynthesis take place?
A
Chloroplast
1
Q
Photosynthesis
A
Process by which light energy from the sun is converted into chemical energy
2
Q
Chloroplast
A
- light absorbing organelles
- green in color from presence of chlorophyll
- present in inner cells of leaves
3
Q
Chloroplast structure
A
- double membrane organelle Outer membrane Inner membrane Stroma (inner compartment, thick fluid) Thylakoid (concentrated in stacks called grana) Granum
4
Q
Chlorophyll
A
Function: captures light energy
5
Q
Light reaction (photo part)
A
- Chlorophyll absorbs solar energy which is then converted into chemical energy.
- Transfer of electrons and Hydrogen from water to an acceptor called NAD+ to form NADPH(reduced).
- Generate ATP by adding phosphate group to ADP.
- Water is split, releasing Oxygen as the by product of photosynthesis.
- ‼️Occurs in the Thylakoids of the Chloroplasts.
6
Q
Calvin cycle (synthesis part)
A
- Starts with initial incorporation of Carbon from the air into organic compounds – CARBON FIXATION
- ATP provides energy and NADPH provides the electrons (from Light reactions).
- Synthesis of sugars (Glucose) takes place only during the Calvin cycle.
- Also called as Dark reaction or Light independent reaction.
- ‼️Occurs in the Stroma of Chloroplasts.
7
Q
Respiration
A
(In mitochondria)
Harvests food energy to produce ATP
