Ch 64: Musculoskeletal Problems Flashcards
Degenerative disc disease (DDD)
progressive degeneration that is a normal process of aging, results in the intervertebral discs losing their elasticity, flexibility, and shock-absorbing capabilities
Herniated disc
herniation of nuclear material from the intervertebral disc that may compress or place tension on a cervical, lumbar, or sacral spinal nerve root
Low back pain
most often due to a musculoskeletal problem
Muscular dystrophy (MD)
a group of genetically transmitted diseases characterized by progressive symmetric wasting of skeletal muscle without evidence or neurologic involvement
Osteochondroma
primary benign bone tumor characterized by overgrowth of cartilage and bone near the end of the bone at the growth plate
Osteomalacia
a rare condition of adult bones associated with vitamin D deficiency, resulting in decalcification and softening of bone
Osteomyelitis
a severe infection of the bone, bone marrow, and surrounding soft tissue
Osteopnia
bone loss that is more than normal (T-score between -1 and -2.5), but not yet at the level for a diagnosis of osteoporosis
Osteoporosis
metabolic bone disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioratized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to an increasing bone fragility and pathologic fractures
Osteosarcoma
primary bone tumor that is extremely aggressive and rapidly metastasizes to distant sites, usually occurs in the metaphysical region of the long bones of the extremeities
Paget’s disease
skeletal bone disorder in which there is excessive bone resorption followed by replacement of normal marrow by vascular, fibrous connective tissue and new bone that is large, disorganized, and weaker
Sarcoma
malignant tumor that originates from embryonal mesoderm that becomes connective tissue, muscle, bone, and fat
