Sprain
an injury to ligaments surrounding a joint, usually caused by wrenching or twisting motion.
Strain
An excessive stretching of a muscle and its fascial sheath, often involving a tendon.

R- rest
I- ice
C- compression
E- elevation

5 Ps (Fractures)
Pain Pulse Pallor Paresthesia Paralysis
Strain and sprain symptoms:
Pain, edema, and decrease in function
If there is a break in skin integrity or open fracture, what is administered
Tetanus and diphtheria prophylaxis
For open fracture, large tissue defects, or mangled extremity what is administered
Antibiotic prophylaxis
Ice application should not exceed
30 min per application
Heat application is given no more than
20-30 min
Acute intervention for sprains or strains
1) Stop activity and limit movement
2) Apply ice compresses to injured areas
3) Compress the involved extremity
4) Elevate the extremity
5) Provide analgesia
