Biome
A region that is defined by a certain type of climate, plants, and animal communities.
Climate
The weather conditions that occurs in an area over a long period of time.
Latitude
The distance north or south of the equator which is measured in degrees.
Altitude
The height of an object above sea level.
Tropical Rain Forest
Humid and Warm and get about 200-450 cm of rain a year.
Emergent Layer
A layer that consists in the tallest trees in the region.
Canopy
Trees can grow to 30 meters and take up 95% of the sunlight.
Epiphytes
Use the entire surface of a tree to live.
Understory
Tree’s, shrubs, and other plants grow to 3.5 m and get very little sunlight.
Temperate Rain Forest
Have large amounts of precipitation, high humidity, and moderate temperatures.
Temperate Deciduous Forests
These Trees drop their broad, flat leaves each fall. The range of tempatures can be extreme.
Taiga
The northern coniferous forest that stretches in a broad band across the Northern Hemisphere just below the the Arctic Circle.
Savanna
A tropical biome dominated by grasses, shrubs, and small trees.
Temperate Grassland
Cover large areas of the interior of continents, where there is moderate rainfall but trees and shrubs cannot be established because of lack of rainfall.
Chaparral
A temperate shrubland biome that is found in all parts of the world with a Mediterranean climate.
