Ch. 5 Key Terms Flashcards
Photosynthesis
The transfer of energy from the Sun to being used by the Plants.
Producer
An organism that can produce it’s own food.
Consumer
Organisms that get their energy from eating other organisms.
Decomposer
Organisms that get their energy by decomposing other organisms.
Cellular Respiration
The process of breaking down the Carbohydrates to yield energy.
Food Chain
The path of energy from one organism to the next.
Food Web
Includes more organisms than a food chain and shows the organisms relationships on a larger scale.
Trophic Level
The steps of which energy is transferred in a chain or a web.
Carbon Cycle
Process of where carbon is cycled through the atmosphere, land, water, and organisms.
Nitrogen-Fixing bacteria
Can fix atmospheric nitrogen into a useful form called ammonia.
Nitrogen Cycle
The process of nitrogen is cycled between the atmosphere, soil, and organisms.
Phosphorus Cycle
The movement of Phosphorus from the envirnment to different organisms.
Ecological Succession
The gradual process of change and replacement of some or all of the species in a community.
Primary Succession
Succession where there wasn’t any organisms living there previously.
Secondary Succession
Succession where there were organisms living in the area prior to succession.
