Hearing
The process in which sound waves strike the eardrum and cause vibrations that are transmitted to the brain
Listening
Occurs when the brain reconstructs these electrochemical impulses into a representation of the original sound and then give them meaning
Attending
The act of paying attention to a signal
Understanding
The process of making sense of a message
Listening fidelity
The degree of congruence between what a listener understands and what the message sender was trying to communicate
Responding
To a message concussed of giving considerable feedback to the speaker; it helps you clarify your understanding of the speakers message and it shows that you care about what the speaker is saying

Remembering what they said
Residual message
What we remember
Mindless listening
Passive, low level information listening
Pseudo listening
An imitation of the real thing. They look/act like they’re listening, a polite facade
Selective listening
Responding only to the parts I f a speakers remarks that interests them
Defensive listening
Listeners that take innocent comments as personal attacks
Ambushing
Listen carefully but only bc they’re collecting information to attack what you have to say
Insulated listening
Opposite of selective listening; avoid certain topics
Insensitive listening
People who don’t receive another persons message clearly. They aren’t able to look beyond the words and behavior to see hidden meaning, and take things for face value (boys)
Stage hogging
Turning the story to themselves
Message overload
Being bombarded by texts, email, tweets, talking to ppl, background noise
Rapid thought
Day dreaming, thinking what you’re gonna say next, do next, wandering etc
Psychological noise
Wrapped up in our own personal concerns
Physical noise
Other sounds in our environment
Hearing problems

Faulty assumptions
We give others a mental brush off bc we assume their remarks don’t have much value i.e.; interrupting others bc you think you know there gonna say etc
Task oriented listening
Aims to secure information necessary to get the job done
Questioning
Involves asking for additional information to clarify your idea of a senders message
Sincere questions
Aimed at understanding others
Counterfeit questions
Really disguised attempts to send a message, not receive one
Question me that make statements
Are you ready to go now? You can’t be serious about that right?
Questions that carry hidden agendas
Are you busy Friday night?
questions that seek “correct answers
What shoe do you think I should wear?
Questions made on unchecked assumption
Why aren’t you listening to me?
Paraphrasing
Restating feedback in your own words without adding anything new
Relational listening
Aims at emotionally connecting with others. More focused on understanding ppl that trying to control them
Analytical listening
Aims to understand the message. Exploring an issue from a variety of perspectives in order to understand it awfully as possible
Critical listening
Going beyond trying to understand and analyze the topic at hand, and instead, try to assess its quality
Examine the speakers evidence and reasoning
Is the evidence recent enough
Is enough evidence presented
Is the evidence from a reliable source
Evaluate the speakers credibility
Is the speaker competent
Is the speaker impartial
Advising response
To help by offering a solution
Judging response
Evaluates a senders thoughts or behaviors in some way
Analyzing statement
The listener tries to help by offering and interpretation of a speakers message
