A set of relatively stable perceptions that each of us hold about ourselves

Selection, organization, interpretation
Selection
The selection of which data we will attend to. If it’s intense (stands out) we see that first. Change in stimulation (nice person is being mean). Emotional state. My
Organization
Arrange information we’ve selected in a meaningful way in order to make sense of the world. Physical construct, role constructs, interaction constructs, psychological constructs
Interpretation
We interspersed all of this in a way that makes sense. First is our degree involvement w the person. Then personal experience, assumptions about human behavior, expectations, and knowledge of others.
Influences on perception
Psychological, health and nutrition biological cycles, neurology. Cultural, sex and gender roles, occupational roles (the kind of work we do shapes how we see things), relational roles (mom, sister, friend)
Narrative
The personal stories that we and others create to make sense of out personal world
Differential treatment
Getting special treatment over someone else
Attribution
The process of attaching meaning to behavior
We make snap judgements
Stereotyping, categorizing others, ascribing characteristics to most or all members of a group, applying the generalization to one person
Self-serving bias
In an attempt to convince ourselves and others that the positive face we show to the world is true, we ten to judge ourselves in the most generous terms possible
Empathy
The ability to re create another persons perspective, to experience the world from another persons pov. Perspective taking, emotional concern, genuine concern
Sympathy
You feel compassion for another persons predicament
Perceived self
Reflection of the self concept, who you think you are in moments of honest self-evaluation
Presenting self
Public image of how we want to appear to others
Face
Describes presenting self

Verbal and nonverbal ways we act to maintain our presenting image and image of others
Characteristics of identity management
We have multiple identities, identity management is collaborative, identity management can be conscious or unconscious, some ppl are more aware than others about their identity
