Communication vs communications
Face to face vs Technology and mass media
Symbols
Used to represent things, process, ideas or events
McDonald’s arches, middle finger, hashtag vs pound sign
Linear model
Sender encodes ideas and feelings into a message and conveys them to a receiver who decodes them.
Transactional model
Both sending and receiving are simultaneous. Face to face communication is a two way affair. i.e.: you tell friend about love life and they yawn
Interpersonal communication
Communicating with ones self
Didactic communication
Two people interacting, face to face or through technology
Small group communication
Family group, athletic team, group of co workers, class project etc
Organizational communication
When a larger more permanent collection of ppl collectively to achieve goals i.e. Commercials, charities, political groups, health related (doctors office), and recreational (sports league)
Public communication
When a group becomes too large for the whole group to contribute
Mass communication
Messages transmitted to large, widespread audiences via electronic and print media
Web 2.0
How Internet has gone from one-way medium (like old style publishers and broadcasters) into two-way like social networking i.e. Contributing post on tumblr or Twitter not only consuming but creating content on the internet
Synchronous communication
Occurs in real time, in person communication
Asynchronous communication
When there’s a time gap in between messages sent and when it’s received i.e. Voicemail and email etc
Permanence
When it’s on the internet, it’s forever there
How ppl use social media:
Information, personal relationships, personal identity, entertainment
Communicating competently with social media:
Respecting others need for undecided attention (texting during dinner is bad), disinhibition (sending an angry text w/o thinking about it)(regret), flaming (irreversible emotional damage from outbursts on media), respect privacy boundaries
Functions of communication
Physical (you need ppl to depend on), identity (we learn who we are thru others), social (pleasure, affection, relaxation, inclusion), practical (communication w ppl in everyday life ie cashier or hair stylist)
Communication competence
Effective communication involves achieving ones goals in a manner that maintains or enhances the relation ship in which it occurs. It’s situational (how u handle something in a situation bs another). Relational (communication is competent in one relationship but not others)(Tera gagnen vs your friends). Competence can be learned.
Competent communication has different behaviors
There are different ways you could react to a situation. Someone pisses you off, you could show them your mind or be a big person and walk away
Empathy/perspective taking
Ppl give good message when they understand other persons point of view.
Cognitive complexity
Ability to construct a variety of frameworks for viewing an issue. Looking at something from many different angles.
Self monitoring
Process of paying close attention to ones behavior using these observations to shape the way one behaves
Communication does not always require complete understanding
Social rituals (hi how are you, good, u don’t need to go further than that). Many attempts to influence others. Deliberate ambiguity and deception (declining an invite u don’t want to go to but u say I can’t make it). Coordination action participants interact smoothly with one another well “I love you”
More communication isn’t always better and will not solve all problems. Meaning rest in ppl, not words
Disconnecting, dissimulation
