Ch 4 Exercise Metabolism and Bioenergetics Flashcards
Gluconeogenesis
Process during a negative energy balance that uses amino acids in energy production
amino acids=proteins
Glycogen
Stored glucose.
The storage form of carbohydrates in muscle tissue and the liver
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
Energy storage and transfer unit within the cells of the body
ATP-PC System
ATP-PC (creatine) 0-30 sec in duration, HIGH intensity, Fast twitch muscle fibers (type II) and carb utilization (sprinter)
Energy system used during the onset of activity and primarily maintained during the first 30 seconds of activity
Glycolysis
The anaerobic chemical breakdown of glucose for energy.
Energy system without oxygen used primarily for the first 30 to 50 seconds of activity, dropping off around 3 minutes ex: jogging 1-2 laps
Oxidative System (Aerobic)
- known as the Krebs cycle and the citric acid cycle. In this system, carbohydrates and fats are the primary energy sources converted into ATP and this process takes place in the mitochondria of the cell.
- powers the capacity for Client to recover from anaerobic activity optimally.
Excess Post Oxygen Consumption (EPOC)
The state where there is an elevation of the body’s metabolism after exercise
What is the proper order for oxidation of a FREE FATTY ACID?
Aerobic Glycolysis, Krebs cycle, Electron Transport Train
AKE - all kittens eat
What energy system is a power lifter/sprinter utilizing?
ATP-PC
What is the chief source of energy for all body functions and muscular exertion?
Carbs
Glucose
Primary end product after the digestion of carbohydrates
Anaerobic
Processes that do not require the use of oxygen.
Ex: sprinting/lifting weights
Aerobic
Processes of energy that require the use of oxygen
Ex: running/swimming
Aerobic is the first part of beta oxidation, krebs cycle is second, Electron Transport Chain(ETC) is the third
What is the most efficient, but slowest and most complex pathway to energy where ATP is created in the presence of oxygen?
Oxidative phosphorylation (aerobic glycolysis + Krebs cycle + electron transport chain)
What are 2 factors that determine energy use during exercise?
Intensity and duration
