Ch. 38 WS Flashcards
moles
nevi (nevus)
skin cells that produce melanin
melanocytes
rare disease of the skin starting in childhood and marked by disseminated pigment discolorations, ulcers, cutaneous and muscular atrophy, and death.
xeroderma pigmentosum
a genetically linked condition to Basal Cell carcinoma that appears during the late teen years.
basal cell nevus syndrome
an inherited familial atypical mole and melanoma syndrome. 1)occurrence in one or more first-degree or second-degree relatives,
2) 50+ moles, some of which are atypical and vary in size and shape,
3) moles with certain distinct histologic features. Lifetime risk of getting melanoma is 100%.
dysplastic nevus syndrome
dilation of the surface blood vessels caused by the loss of capillary tone, resulting in a fine spider-vein appearance on the skin surface
telangiectasia
acute radiation effect, manifested by redness and inflammation of the skin or mucous membranes, is effected by capillary congestion, caused by dilation of the superficial capillaries.
erythema
a process of increasing the temperature of an area in conjunction with radiation in effort to increase cell kill.
hyperthermia
Primary drainage lymph node of a specific anatomic area. For example, the sentinel node for the breast is most commonly located near the axilla.
sentinel lymph node
shedding of the epidermis, appears at intermediate doses of radiation. The radiation affects the sensitive basal cells, and although not all are killed, enough are compromised that the basal layer has a hard time replacing the cells naturally sloughed off.
dry desquamation
Appears at high-dose levels necessary to control skin cancer. Nearly all the cells of the epidermis have gone through their normal cycle, no cells from the germinal layer exist to replace them. The dermis then becomes exposed and begins producing a serous oozing from its surface
moist dequamation
The amount of ultraviolet radiation that a fabric or protective clothing blocks
ultra violet protection factor
Hair loss. Partial or complete lack of hair
alopecia
what is the minimum dose at which alopecia can occur
2000 cGy
