Ch 35 pt 2 (brain) Flashcards
Brain structure
Hindbrain
Cerebellum
Pons
Medulla oblongata
Midbrain
Optic tectum
Forebrain
Thalamus & Hypothalamus
Basal ganglia
Corpus callosum
Hippocampus
Cerebral cortex
Cerebrum
Cerebral cortex (gyrus -convulses, sulcus - creases)
Function:
Higher thinking, personality, skeletal muscle, sensory info
Cerebral hemispheres
Corpus callous connects the hemispheres
Four lobes:
- Frontal (olfaction)
- Parietal (speech/reading, touch/orientation)
- Occipital (audition)
- Temporal (audition)
Thalamus
Relays sensory information to Occipital, Temporal, and Parietal lobes of Cerebrum
Hypothalamus
Regulates body temp, hunger, and thirst
With Hippocampus and amygdala ( Limbic system - emotional regulation)
Medulla oblongata
Controls breathing and regulates heartrate
Cerebellum
Posture and balance
Otoliths (ear stones in fluid that respond to gravity)
- if gets out of wack, can cause vertigo and nausea
Pons
Transmits brain signals to spinal cord
Spinal cord
Conveys and controls messages without needed to send the signal back to the brain
(reflex reactions)
Peripheral Nervous System
Nerves [axons], Ganglia [cell bodies], Somatic, Autonomic
Somatic
Voluntary movement controlled by Peripheral nervous system
Autonomic
Involuntary movement controlled by Peripheral nervous system
Sympathetic (fight or flight)
Parasympathetic (rest or repose)
Glioblastoma
Cancer of myelin sheath
