Ch 3.4 Development Of The Zygote Flashcards
Whats a seed? What does it contain?
A fertilized egg in the ovary of the flower
It contains the embryo and stores foo
Whats an embryo?
The result of a sperm and egg fusing together
Whats a cotyledon?
Seeds that contain seed leaves
What are dicotyledons?
Plants that produce seeds with two seed leaves
What is monocotyledons?
Seeds that produce one cotyledon
Whats to germinate?
To grow
Whats a radicle?
The part of the embryo that develops into roots
Whats an epicotyl?
It becomes the stem and leaves
Whats a hypocotyl?
It pushes up through the soul and protects the epicotyl
What do eggs contain?
Zygote, nutrients and a mechanism for protection
What do the eggs of reptiles and birds contain?
A single embryo surrounded by a cell (amniotic egg)
Whats an albumen?
Cushions the embryo and its an additional source of food
Whats an amnion?
Fluid like sac, cushions the embryo
Whats a yolk sac?
It stores food for the embryo
whats a chorion and a allantois?
It controls the movement of gases and wastes in and out the egg
Name three types of parental care
Birds sit on their eggs to keep them warm or insulating them with their feathers
Sea turtle mothers dig hole in sand, lay their eggs, bury them, then leave
Parasitic tapeworms live in the intestines of animals, they release egg cases that contain thousands of eggs
What are the 3 living species of monotremes? What is monotremes?
The duckbill platypus and two species of spiny ant eaters
Mammals that lay eggs
Whats placenta?
Organ that develops around the fetus and connects to the mother
Whats a fetus?
Developing offspring
Whats an umbilical cord?
Connected to the fetus
Carries wastes out of fetus and nutrients into the fetus
What are marsupials?
The embryos of these animals are born very tiny young and immature because they do not develop very long inside the mother
They climb out of the mums birth canal in to the fur pouch where they attach to the nipple of the mammary gland
Give two unique facts about spiny anteaters and a duckbill platypus
Care for their eggs during incubation
Platypus: lays eggs in burrows, incubates them until they hatch
Spiny anteater: incubates eggs in pouch
What does food do in a plant? What is it a form of?
Nourishes it until it can make food itself
It a form of starch and sugar
What is endosperm?
Supplies food
Explain the life of a flower or fruit.
Pollen fertilizes eggs
After fertilization, the sepal wilts and the ovary enlarges into fruit
Then it becomes immature fruit
Then mature fruit
