Hyposecretion of thyriod horomone during youth. Results in a low metabolic rate, retarded growth and sexual development, and possible retardation.
Cretinism
Hyposecretion of TH during adulthood. Decreases metabolic rate, loss of mental and physical stamina, weight gain, loss of hair, firm edema, and jaundice.
Myxedema
An enlargment of the thyroid gland as a result of over stimulation of the thyroid glad.
Goiter
A term that means ‘normal thyroid horomones.’
euthyroid
Prefered drug for Tx of hypothyroidism because its content is standardized and therefore has a more predictable effect.
levothyroxine
Most severe adverse effect of thyroid replacement medications
cardiac dsyrhythmias
S/S: tachycardia, palpitations, angina, hypertension, insomnia, tremors, headache, anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, menstrual irregularities, weight loss, appetite changes, sweating, and heat intolerance
thyroid drugs adverse effects and also S/S of hyperthyroidism
Inhibit the converstion of iodine into T3 and T4. May cause liver* and bone marrow toxicity
methimazole
propylthiouracil*
