Ch. 29 MAO Flashcards
First-line drug therapy for hypercholesterolemia. Reduce LDL levels and triglycerides, and increase HDL levels.
HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors
Lower the rate of cholesterol production by inhibiting the enzyme that is used by the liver to produce cholesterol. Recommended to be taken in the evening.
HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors
Adverse reactions include: myopathy possibly leading to rhabdomyolysis, and elevations in liver enzymes.
HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor
____ should be monitored while a PT is taking HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors.
CPK
Prevent resorption of bile acids from small intestine. Bile acids are necessary for absorption of cholesterol.
bile acid sequestrants
Inhibits the absorption of cholesterol from the small intestine.
ezetimibe
Believed to activate lipase. Suppresses the release of free fatty acid from adipose tissue, inhibits synthesis of triglycerides and increases secretion of cholesterol in the bile.
Fibric Acid Derivatives “fibrates”
Thought to increase the activity of lipase, which breaks down lipids. Also decreases the metabolism of cholesterol and triglycerides.
