Ch. 3 - Muscle Tissue Flashcards
1
Q
Muscle Tissue (general traits)
A
- contractile - shiver (contract)
- elastic
- extensible - back to original state
- excitable - tied to nerves
2
Q
Muscle Tissue (types)
A
Skeletal, Cardiac, Smooth
3
Q
Skeletal Muscle Tissue
A
- large cylindrical fibers (muscle fiber=muscle cell *long cells)
- DO NOT BRANCH
- multinucleated
- striated (stripe like visual feature due to compact fibers)
- voluntary (movement of skeleton/opening of digestive or urinary tracts)
- skeletal muscle fibers are incapable of dividing, but satellite cells repair and make new fibers(stem/mesenchymal cells)
functions: moves or stabilizes the position of the skeleton, guards entrances and exits to the digestive, respiratory, and urinary tracts, generates heat, protects internal organs
4
Q
Cardiac Muscle Tissue
A
- heart
- unicellular BRANCHED cardiocytes (smaller than a skeletal muscle fiber)
- uninucleate
- cardiocytes form extensive connections with one another, and these connections occur at intercalated discs
- striated
- involuntary (produces heart beat)
- once cardiac muscles are damaged, they do not regenerate because they lack satellite cells
function: circulates blood, maintains blood pressure
