Ch. 3 - Membranes Flashcards
1
Q
Membranes (functions)
A
- form barriers
- made of epithelial and CT
- cover and product
2
Q
Membranes (different types)
A
Mucous membrane, serous membrane, cutaneous membrane, synovial membrane
3
Q
Mucous membrane
A
line passageways open to exterior (mainly simple/pseudostratified columnar epithelial)
- contain areolar CT tissue (lamina propria) *provides support for the blood vessels and nerves that supply the epithelium
ex. respiratory/mouth/digestive and urinary tracts - form a barrier that resists the entry of pathogens
4
Q
Serous membrane
A
simple squamous mesothelium supported by areolar CT rich in blood and lymphatic vessels
- secretes watery fluid
location: lines pleural cavity, abdominopelvic cavity, scrotal cavity, and pericardial cavity
5
Q
Cutaneous membrane
A
skin
-covers body surface, thick, waterproof, dry, strongest membrane
1-epithelial 2-areolar CT 3-dense irregular CT
6
Q
Synovial Membrane
A
in synovial (most common/most movable) joints
- produces synovial fluid (reduces friction between the articular cartilage of synovial joints during movement) *lubricates joints
- epithelium, areolar tissue, adipocytes
