Intimate partner violence
has more injuries attributed to it than rapes, muggings and car accidents combined
Neurophysiological Influences on abuse
limbic system, the amyloid nucleus, the temporal lobe are altered
Biochemical influences on abuse
norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine have been implicated in the regulation of aggressive behaviors.
Genetic influence on abuse
may be hereditary but isn’t really known
Profile of a victim of intimate partner violence
low self esteem
not enough of a support system
Profile of a victimizer
low self-esteem, pathologically jealous and they also present with a dual personality. They also exhibit limited coping ability.
The Walker Cycle (cycle of battering) has 3 phases)
Tension building phase
Acute battering incident
Calm, loving honeymoon phase
Characteristics of a child abuser
People who were abused as children
poverty, stress and social isolation
Elements of an incestuous relationship
an impaired spousal relationship. The father is often domineering and the mother is very passive
Common characteristics seen in adult survivors of incest
lack of trust
low self-esteem
lack of sexual pleasure
promiscuity
Disorders that adult survivors of incest are at risk for
PTSD depression/anxiety eating disorders substance disorders sexual disorders intolerance or constant search for intimacy
Profile of a rapist
mother had been “seductive but rejecting”, overbearing but quick to withdraw love

the victim expresses feelings of fear, anger, and anxiety through such behaviors as crying, sobbing, restlessness, and tension.

feelings of the victim are masked or hidden, and a calm, composed, or subdued affect is seen
