- see best at distance 8in
- eyes should align by 3mo

- eustachian tube shorter, wider, and more horizontal
2. tympanic membrane close to surface
conjunctivitis-4
- bacterial unilateral
- viral bilateral
- careful hand hygiene, don’t share towels
- warm drops to room temp
periorbital ecchymosis (black eye)
apply ice to both eyes 5-15min q hr for 1-2 days, then warm compress second day after injury
otitis media
inflammation of middle ear
otitis media kids-5
boys, daycare, allergies, cig smoke, pacifiers for several hours
acute otitis media-4
acute onset of pain, marked redness of tympanic membrane, middle ear effusion
- intact membrane before drops
- v/d, fever, night awakenings
- Hib vaccine
otitis media w effusion-2
fluid in the middle ear without inflammation
-difficulty hearing
otitis externa-2
- swimmers ear
- inflammation of skin and surrounding soft tissue of ear canal
conducted hearing loss-2
- conditions in the external auditory canal or tympanic membrane prevent sound from reaching the middle ear
- impacted cerumen, outer ear infection, trauma, foreign body
sensorineural hearing loss-4
- hair cells in cochlea or along the vestibulocochlear nerve are damaged
- high frequency sounds most effected
- ,ay be preceeded by tinnitis
- loud noises
deaf infants
babble as normal at 5-6mo then decreases
cochlear implants-3
minimum age 12mo, most 2-6yrs
- infection and meningitis complications
- need pneumococcal and Hib vaccine before surgery
insects in ear-2
shine light in ear, oil in ear
nosebleed-5
avoid bending over, stooping, strenuous exercise, hot drinks, hot showers for 4 days
tonsilectomy-4
avoid citrus juices, chew gum
- bleeding likely w/n 24hrs then 7-10 days after
- back of throat white 7-8 days after
- low grade fever expected
