Ch 22 Flashcards
communicable disease
illness passed via direct, indirect, or vector transmission
infant and child disease vulnerability-4
- immune systems not fully developed at birth
- passively acquired maternal antibodies provide limited protection
- disease protection through immunization is incomplete
- poor hygiene
airborn precautions-3
measles, chicken pox, tuberculosis
droplet precautions-4
Hib, pneumonia, rubella, pertussis
contact precautions-3
hep A, e. coli, gonorrhea
killed virus vaccine
a vaccine that contains a microorganism that has been killed but is still capable of inducing body to produce antibodies
toxoid
a toxin that has been treated to weaken its toxic effects but retain its antigenicity
live virus vaccine
live but attenuated or weakened form
recombinant vaccine
organism genetically altered
local reactions from vaccine
erythema, swelling, pain, and induration at site of injection
systemic reaction to vaccine
fever, fussiness/irritability, malaise, anorexia, rash
