Used during the Middle Ages, but only regularly since fifteenth century - Linseed-oil binder (by-product of flax) - Flexible, slow drying, and can be blended days after application, allowing for smooth effects and fine detail

attain a rich luminosity, as though lit from within

Allegory
means an image of a person that represents or symbolizes ideas or abstract concepts, in most general sense is an extended metaphor
Watercolor
Pigment suspended in water with a sticky binder, usually gum arabic
Gouache
An additive (often chalk) in gouache makes the paint opaque
Acrylic
paints are composed of pigments suspended in an acrylic polymer resin
