Ch 2: Principals of Drug Action Flashcards
Pharmacokinetics
the study of a drug during absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion
Absorption
the passage of drugs from the site into the bloodstream, it is the first step in the drug action
Distribution
After a drug is transported from the bloodstream to the sight of action
Metabolism
the bio transformation mostly in the liver by converting the drug into a water soluble compound so the body can be able to be excreted
Excretion
is the body way of removing the products of ordinary cell processes
Detoxify
Eliminate substances that are toxic to the body an older adult with kidney disease is at increased risk of toxicity from exposures of high doses to a drug.
Factors that Affect Drug Action
Age, size, diet, sex, genetic factors, pathological conditions, psychological factors, route of administration, time of administration, drug taking history, environmental conditions, food and drug interactions.
food and Drug interactions
calcium-decreases the absorbtion of antiiotics
Grapefruit- affect the absorbtion of certain colesteral medications
green leafy veggies-decrease the effect of anti coagulants
Allergy
abnormal response because a person has developed antibodies against a drug. when a person takes the allergy causing drug called the antigen the antibodies attack it
Histamine
responsible for the symptoms usually seen in allergic reactions
Anaphylaxis
is an extreme hypersensitivity reaction to a previously encountered antigen
Idiosyncrasy
Opposite of expected effect, stop Medication,
Tolerance
lessened effect of a drug, increase dose of change medication
Cumulation
stronger effect,stop medication
Toxicity
diverse symptoms effecting different organs, stop medication
Synergism
stronger effect when more than one drug taken
Antagonism
weaker effect when more than one drug taken
Potentiation
drug increased effect with another drug
Interaction
therapeutic or adverse effect on the body
Physical dependence
physiological need for a drug
Psychological Dependence
psychological craving for a drug
Withdrawal Symptoms
when a drug is taken away a person experiences physical a psychological symptoms
Drug Abuse
self administration of a drug in excessive quantities
