CH 15: Drugs for the Endocrine System Flashcards
Endocrine System
Is made of glands and structures that produce substances called hormones directly into the bloodstream; hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, pineal, thymus, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries and testes
Glands
Structures that produce and excretes hormones
Hormones
chemical substances that are directly absorbed into the bloodstream
Pituitary
is located at the base of the brain has 2 lobesthe anterior is particularly important in sustaining life, growth hormones an sex glands and the adrenal glands also known as the master gland.
Thyroid Gland
produces Thyroxine T4 and triiodothyronine T3 which controls a persons metabolism
Metabolism
rate at which all cells produce energy the metabolic rate is increased when there is an increase in temperature, respiration, heart rate and triiodothyroine causes cell metabolism to slow down.
Iodine
is needed to produce adequate thyroxine and triiodothyronine, the thyroid gland needs a mineral that is present in vegetables and seafood
Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism
Creatinism, Myxedeme
too little thyroxine or too much triiodothyronine
Parathyroid
four glands behind the thyroid maintain normal blood calcium levels
Tetany
too little calcium and muscles will go into spasms and cause convulsions and paralysis can be fatal
Adrenal Glands
sit superior to the kidneys, has 2 layers, the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla
Regulates the metabolism of Carbohydrates
Adrenal
secretescorticosteroids and glucosteroids and regulates the mineralocorticosteroids to maintain normal blood volume and and sodium water retention and urinary excretion of potassium
Corticosteroid
Glucocorticoids
regulate the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats and has an anti-inflammatory effect.
Mineralcorticoids
maintain normal blood volume and and sodium water retention and urinary excretion of potassium
Pancreas
secretes enzymes as part of the digestive system
Insulin
controlled the cells use of sugar
Diabetes Mellitis
when the pancreas fails to produce insulin, the cells cannot burn sugar, instead it remains in the bloodstream and excreted in the urine
Ovaries and Testes
Hormone Control System
Hyperplasia
