Ch - 2 (Electronic Configuration) Flashcards
How can we represent the structure of the atom?
We can represent this in electron shell diagrams, or by writing a special notation called electronic configuration (or electronic structure of electronic distribution)
Where do electrons orbit?
Electrons orbit the nucleus in shells (energy levels) and each shell has a different amount of energy associated with it.
What do electrons fill?
Electrons fill the shells closest to the nucleus.
What happens when a shell becomes full of electrons?
Additional electrons have to be added to the next shell.
How many electrons can the 2nd shell hold?
8
For the first 20 elements, how many electrons can the 3rd shell hold?
8, and of there are my extra then they will be in the 4th shell.
Define valence shell.
The outermost shell of any atom s known as the valence shell.
What are the electrons in the valence shell called?
Valence electrons
What are groups in a periodic table?
vertical line
What are periods in a periodic table?
Horizontal line
What does the period tell us about an elelment?
The no. of shells in an electronic configuration
What does the group tell us about an element?
The no. of valence electrons in the valence shell.
What does the atomic no. tell us about an element?
Total no. of electrons in electronic configuration (sum)
What is the relationship with the elements in the same group?
Same no. of outer electrons.
