Ch - 15 (Reactivity Series) Flashcards
What can the series be used for?
To place a group of metals in order of reactivity.
What are the 2 non-metals also included and why?
- Hydrogen and Carbon
- extract metals from their oxides
What is the pneumonic for reactivity series?
Please (Potassium)
Send (Sodium)
Lions (Lithium)
Cats (Calcium)
Monkeys (Magnesium)
And (Aluminium)
Cute (Carbon)
Zebras (Zinc)

The (Tin)
Lovely (Lead)
Hot (Hydrogen)
Countries (Copper)
Signed (Silver)
General (Gold)
Penguins (Platinum)
Hat type of ions form metals?
- Positive ions
- Loss of electrons
How do you know if a metal is reactive?
- Tenancy of metal to lose electrons
What can be concluded about the metal on the top of the series?
- On the top (loses electrons much easily)
- more reactive
When will a displacement reaction take place?
Metal will displace with a metal that is below the reactivity series.
What makes metals better reducing agents?
Tenancy of more reactive metals to lose electrons and form ions more readily, than less reactive metal.
What does RIG mean?
Reduction is gain of electrons
With what does the aluminium not react with?
- High in reactivity
- No reaction with water
- reaction with dilute acids will be very slow.
Why is the reaction with dilute acid for aluminum slow?
- Reacts readily with O2
- Thin protective layer of aluminum oxide
- The layer prevents reaction with water and dilute acids.
