2 - (Atomic Structure) Flashcards
Define an element.
- A substance which is made up of only 1 type of atom (same no. of protons) in it.
- Elements cannot be broken down into anything simpler by chemical reactions.
Define a compound.
- A pure substance made up of two or more elements chemically combined.
- Cannot be separated.
Define a mixture.
- A combination of two or more substances (elements/compounds) that are not chemically combined.
What is an atom made of?
Subatomic parties
What are the subatomic particles.
- Protons
- Neutrons
- Electrons
What is the relative mass of the subatomic particles?
- Protons - 1
- Neutrons - 1
- Electrons - 1/1840
What is the charge of the subatomic particles?
What does one relative atomic mass equal to?
One relative atomic mass unit is equal to1/12th the mass of carbon -12th
What is the atomic no. ?
Proton number ( The no. of prtons in an element)
What is the mass no. ?
Total no. of neutrons + protons
What is another name for mass no. ?
Nucleon Number
How do we find the neutron no. ?
Nucleon no. - proton no.
Where is atomic no. n mass no. found?
Atomic no. = Bottom
Mass no. = Top
If it is an ion what is important to note?
Proton no. will never change.
How do we find the no. of protons?
mass no. - No. of neutrons
Why does an atom have the same no. of electrons and protons?
An atom is neutral
What is an easy way to know the mass no. in exams in periodic table?
MASS = MASSIVE (It will always be the larger no. )
