Ch 19 Vocab Flashcards
Eubacteria
Bacteria that is ecologically diverse in a kingdom
Prokaryote
Single celled organisms that lack a nucleus
Archaebacteria
Bacteria that live in extreme environments
Bacilli
Rod shaped prokaryotes
Cocci
Spherical prokaryotes
Spirilla
Spiral and corkscrew shaped prokaryotes
Gram staining
A method used to tel prokaryotes apart
Chemoheterotrophs
Prokaryotes that have to take in organic molecules for both energy and supply of carbon
Photo heterotrophs
Smaller group of prokaryotes that are photosynthetic. They use sunlight for energy, but also take in organic compounds as a carbon source
Photo autotrophs
Prokaryotes that are autotrophs, which they use light energy to convene carbon dioxide and water to carbon compounds
Chemo autotrophs
Prokaryotes that can do chemosynthesis
Obligate aerobes
Bacteria that have to live with oxygen
Obligate anaerobes
Bacteria that need to live without oxygen
Facultative anaerobes
Bacteria that can survive with or without oxygen
Binary fission
A type of reproduction that doubles in size, replicated DNA, and divides in half
Conjugation
Bacteria exchanging information
Endospore
Thin internal wall in bacteria that enclosed it’s DNA and a portion of it’s cytoplasm
Rhizobium
Bacterium that grows in nodules or knobs on the roots of soybean plants
Viruses
Particles of nucleic acid, protein, and sometimes, lipids
Capsid
Virus protein
Bacteriophage
Viruses that infect bacteria
Lytic infection
Host cell makes copies of the virus indefinitely
Prophage
Viral DNA that is embedded in the host’s DNA
Retrovirus
Viruses contain RNA as their genetic information
