Ch 10 Mitosis Flashcards
Cell size is Limited by diffusion
CO2 and O2
Cell size
Variety of sizes, 8um 0.000001 (red blood cells) to 1m (nerve)
Cell size is Limited by DNA
Most cells with one nucleus, could not produce amount of enzymes required
Cell size is Limited by surface area to volume ratio
3:1
Role of chromosomes
Visible only right before and right after cell division, it contains DNA
Chromosomes
Exist as chromatin during most of life cycle
Cell cycle
Interphase and mitosis
Interphase
cell growth, DNA replication, preparation for mitosis
Phases of mitosis
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
In Prophase
Chromatids join at the centromere, nuclear membrane disappears, nucleolus disintegrates, centrioles go to the opposite ends of the cell
In metaphase
Chromatids attach to spindle fibers at the centromere, chromatids line up on the equator
Anaphase
Move away from each other
In anaphase
Chromatids pull apart, chromatids are called chromosomes, chromosomes move to the opposite ends
Telophase
Final phase
In telophase
Chromosomes unwind, spindle fibers break down, nucleolus reappears, nuclear membrane reforms
