CH. 18 - Renal System Flashcards
Detrusor muscle
smooth muscle of urinary bladder
External urethral orifice
opening of the urethra to the outside of the body
external urethral sphincter
skeletal muscle ring in the urogenital diaphragm; under voluntary control
Hilus
indentation on medial side of kidney; attachment site of ureter and vessels
Internal urethral orifice
opening from the urinary bladder into the urethra
Internal urethral sphincter
smooth muscle ring at the base of the urinary bladder; under autonomic control
Kidney
major blood filtering organ; right kidney is slightly more inferior than left kidney
Major calyx
located between the minor calyx and renal pelvis
Membranous urethra
passes through the urogenital diaphragm
Minor calyx
receives urine from a renal papilla
Prostatic urethra
only in males; passes through the prostate gland
Renal capsule
dense connective tissue covering of a kidney
Renal cortex
outer portion of kidney
Renal medulla
deeper portion of kidney
Renal papilla
projection into a minor calyx; receives urine from collecting ducts
Renal pelvis
cavity in kidney that collects urine from all nephrons
Renal pyramid
traingular region in kidney; site of collecting ducts
Spongy urethra (penile urethra)
only in males; passes through the penis
