  • Make the subject of the sentence what the sentence is about (who did what/what event happened)
  • Use the doer as the subject of the sentence (active voice)
  • Use a verb to express the action (active voice)
  • Put subject of sentence early in sentence (simplification)
  • Eliminate nominalizations - turning verbs and adjectives into nouns (not “an expectation,” but “expected”)
  • Eliminate excessive prepositional phrases.
  • Eliminate redundancy in sentences.
  • Write sentences that are “breathing length”

  • Metaphors - word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable (“war on cancer” vs “cancer management” - very effective subconsciously, can shift perspective)
  • Pace - increase/decrease intensity/speed
