Psychological disorder
Deviant, distressful, dangerous, and dysfunctional behavior patterns
ADHD
A psychosocial disorder marked by appearance by age 7 of one or more of the 3 key symptoms: extreme inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity
4 D’s
Deviant - different, extreme, unusual (deviation from the majority) (OCD).
Distressful - unpleasant or upsetting to individual.
Dangerous - threatening to the persons well-being or to the safety of others.
Dysfunctional - disruptive to the persons ability to conduct daily activities (fail to adjust).
Diathesis Stress Model
Looks at nature side of nature vs. nurture debate. (Vulnerability hereditary predisposition)
Medical model
Diseases have physical causes that can be diagnosed, treated, in most cases cured. (Established hospitals)
DSM-V
Diagnostic & statistical manual of mental disorders. (Before this psychologists were very inconsistent)
Labeling effects
People don’t want to be viewed as “crazy” don’t want to be treated different,y by people’s knowledge of their disease.
Anxiety disorders
Psychological disorders characterized by persistent anxiety or maladaptive behavior that reduces anxiety.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Which a person is continually tense, apprehensive, and in a state of autonomic nervous system arousal. (Free-floating anxiety)
Panic disorder
Anxiety disorder marked by unpredictable min. - long episodes of intense dread when a person experiences terror & accompanying chest pain and choking
Phobic disorder
Marked by persistent, irrational fear & avoidance of a specific object or stimulation
Obsessive - Compulsive Disorder
Unwanted repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and/or actions (compulsions)
Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD)
Haunting memories, nightmares, social withdrawal, jumpy anxiety, and/or insomnia that lingers for 4 weeks or more after a traumatic experience
Dissociative disorders
Conscious awareness becomes separated (disassociated) from previous memories, thoughts, and feelings
Agoraphobia
A fear or avoidance of situations in which escape will be unavailable when panic strikes
Specific Phobia
Fear of a specific object
Social phobia
Intense fear of being scrutinized by others. Avoid social interaction, speaking up, eating out
Dissociative Identity Disorder
(Rare) a person exhibits 2 or more distinct and alternating personalities (multiple personality disorder)
Mood disorders
Psychological disorders characterized by emotional extremes
Major depressive disorders
A person experiences in the absence of drugs or a medical condition, 2 or more weeks of significantly depressed moods(worthlessness, diminish interest in activities)
Mania
Marked by a hyperactive, wildly optimistic state
Bipolar disorder
Person alternates between hopelessness and lethargy of depression& the overexcited state of mania
Schizophrenia
Severe disorders characterized by disorganized and delusional thinking, disturbed perceptions & inappropriate emotions actions
Delusions
False beliefs, often of persecution or grandeur, that may accompany psychotic disorders
