Ch 16: Immune System Flashcards
What are the 3 components of lymphatic system?
Lymph, lymphatic vessels, lymphoid tissues.
How is pressure for lymphatic movement generated?
By smooth muscle + contraction of skeletal muscle.
Where are the lymph nodes mainly found in? (7 places)
Neck= cervical lymph nodes
Inguinal (junction between torso and thigh)
Folds of elbow = cubital fossa
Behind knee = popliteal fossa
Armpit = axial
Mediastinum = thoracic region
Along great blood vessels in abdominal cavity.
Is spleen divided into lobules?
It shows some extensions but is NOT divided into lobules.
What are the functions of the spleen?
Filters blood, reservoir of lymphocytes, monitors circulatory blood, place where cell encloses pathogen, site of immune response regulation, blood storage organs, recycles Fe and sends it into liver.
When does the immune system start forming?
During 3rd month after conception.
What are the human counterparts of bursa of fabricius (found in chicken embryos at the level where b cells mature)?
Bone marrow, liver, lymph nodes in GI tract.
When can the immune system perform functions for which b and T cells have a central role in?
About 6 months post birth.
When does immune system mature?
1 year post birth.
What 4 things can antigens be?
Part of virus
Part of bacterial flagellum
Part of mood spore
Chemical substance
How can antigens enter the body?
Through small solutions in the mucus us membrane of resp tract
Through skin solution (wound) caused by bite of an anthropod : mosquito, tick etc
