CH:15 Observational Learning Flashcards
Modelling
tendency for a person to copy the behaviour or attitude that is demonstrated by another person
Attention
Relates to the information that you are actively processing, either consciously or outside our conscious awareness. Attention must be paid to the models behaviour and consequences (cognitive aspect of learning). Attention can be influenced by the characteristics of the observer, such as perceptual and cognitive abilities, and arousal level
Motivation
the drive to perform a behaviour which achieves a certain goal. Learner must want to imitate the behaviour - and will depend on whether the learner believes there will be reinforcement for producing the behaviour
Observational Learning
where a person learns by watching the behaviour demonstrated by another
Reinforcement
The expectation of reinforcement or punishment influences the cognitive process of the observer and this affects how well the learner pays attention to and retains the memory of the models behaviour. The learner is more likely to imitate the behaviour if there is the prospective of a positive result
Reproduction
The learner must have the physical and intellectual ability to convert representations into actions
Retention
learning stored in memory. The learnt behaviour must be stored in memory as a mental representation (understanding of what to do in the mind of the learner) so observed behaviour can be performed at a later time. Cognitive aspect
