CH:06 Interwction Between Brain And Structure Flashcards
Occipital lobe
The cerebral cortex at the rear of the brain. It is the locaiton of the primary visual cortex and the association areas involved with integration of visual stimuli
Primary visual cortex
Receives visual information form the eyes to process different types of visual stimuli. Association areas organise them into more complex forms to enable interpretation (perception). Damage would result in not being able to process stimuli
What are the functions of the peripheral nervous system
- to communicate info via sensory nerves from outside ( environment) and inside (internal) worlds to the CNS
- to communicate info from the CNS to the body’s glands, organs and muscles via motor neurons
What is the central nervous system
Consists of the spinal cord and brain. Spinal cord enables the brain to communicate with the rest of the body by conveying messages from the brain to the PNS.
What are the functions of the somatic nervous system
- responsible for the voluntary movement of skeletal muscles. Motor neurons (nerves) communicates messages from the CNS to the particular muscles that needs to be moved.
What are the functions of the autonomic nervous system
Operates without voluntary control or consciousness. It is responsible for communication of information between the CNS and body’s non skeletal (visceral) muscles as well as internal organs
Sympathetic nervous system
Becomes active when the organism perceives itself to be in danger or times of stress. It is essential for survival because it relies the body for action - by running away, fighting or freezing, known as the fight or flight response
Parasympathetic
Operates in relatively calm circumstances. Responsible for maintaining automatic day to day bodily function, such as digestion or heart rate. This is known as homeostasis.
