Ch 15 Futato - Qal Perfect and Imperfect: I Nun and III He Flashcards
Why do I-Nun verbs vary from the standard paradigm?
When nun is followed by a non-gutteral consonant, the nun assimilates to that consonant. This happens in the qal imperfect.
(But nun always has a vowel following it in the qal perfect, so 1-Nun verbs follow the qal-perfect paradigm!)
What is strange about the conjugation of the verb lamed-qof-khet in the qal imperfect?
This verb behaves as if it were a I-Nun verb in the imperfect! The lamed in the first root position does exactly what you would expect a nun in that position to do as it conjugates, disappearing and only being indicated by a dagesh in the qof that had followed it.
Why do we often see yods appearing in conjugations of III-He verbs?
These verbs really only have 2 root letters (since the he is part of a vowel, the qamets-he, at the end). Originally, these words ended with a consonantal yod, which eventually was dropped as the language developed. We see vestiges of this original form in about half of the conjugations between the qal perfects and imperfects.
When an afformative that is a vowel alone (see below) is added to a III-He verb, what happens?
Only a final vowel added?
He goes away!
(this happens in the 2fs, 3mp, 2mp)
What happens if a verb is considered weak in two different root letters?
The form shows the characteristics of EACH weak paradigm.
Example: The following verb is both I-Gutteral and III-He
What is true of the words for most body parts that are paired in Hebrew?
They are feminine, although they appear masculine.
How is a silent alef identified?
The alef will not have a vowel with it, not even a sheva, if it is silent.
What does “I Nun verb” tell us?
The nature of the weakness is that there is a nun causing a change from the normal paradigm, and the Roman numeral identifies it as being in the 1st root position.
What does “III He verb” tell us?
The nature of the weakness is that there is a He causing a change from the normal paradigm, and the Roman numeral identifies it as being in the 3rd root position (root ends in ה).
