dependency ratio
the ratio of the number of people under age 15 y over age 64 in a country to the number of ppl btwn 14-64
quality of life
a person’s well-being y life satisfaction
primary prevention
any intervention that prevents a disease or condition from occurring
secondary prevention
instituted early after condition has begun (may not yet have been diagnosed) y before significant impairments have occurred
tertiary prevention
involves efforts to avoid the development of complications or secondary chronic conditions, manage the pain associated w/ the primary chronic condition, and sustain life through medical intervention
quaternary prevention
efforts specifically aimed at improving the fcnl capacities of ppl who have chronic conditions
aerobic exercise
exercise that places moderate stress on the heart by maintaining a pulse rate btwn 60% - 90% of the person’s maximum heart rate
metabolism
the amount of energy the body needs
low-density lipoproteins (LDLs)
lipoproteins that cause fatty deposits to accumulate in arteries, impeding blood flow
high-density lipoproteins (HDLs)
lipoproteins that help keep arteries clear y break down LDLs
body mass index (BMI)
a ratio of body weight y height related to total body fat
BMI = w/h^2
