ch 14 pt 2 Flashcards
what is the medulla oblongata
begins at foramen magnum of skull, extends about 3 cm rostrally and ends at a groove just below pons.
contains pyramids (pair of ridges on anterior surface resembling side-by-side baseball bats)
separated by anterior median fissure
what four pairs of cranial nerves begin or end in the medulla
VIII (in part), IX, X, and XII
alll ________________ connecting brain and spinal cord pass through the medulla
ascending and descending fibers
what is the reticular formation
loose network of nuclei extending throughout
the medulla, pons, and midbrain
Contains cardiac, vasomotor, and respiratory centers
pons
anterior bulge in brainstem, rostral to medulla
Cerebellar peduncles—thick stalks on posterior pons that connect it (and the midbrain) to the cerebellum
(ascending sensory tracts, descending motor tracts, pathways in and out of cerebellum)
contains cranial nerves 5, 6, 7. and 8
what are pons sensory roles and motor roles
Sensory roles: hearing, equilibrium, taste, facial sensations
Motor roles: eye movement, facial expressions, chewing, swallowing, urination, and secretion of saliva and tears
reticular formation in pons
contains additional nuclei concerned with sleep, respiration, posture
what is within the midbrain
mesencephalon
