Ch. 14 Cell Differentiation Flashcards
Blastocyst?
Hollow ball of cells that surround a cavity filled with fluid, it’s about six days after fertilisation the the zygote has reached the uterus.
What are stem cells special ??
Because they are not specialised for any particular role, unlike other cells
Proliferation ?
when cells replicate themselves many times.
What is differentiation ?
Is the process by which unspecialised cells develop the characteristics and functions of particular types of cells.
Stems cells have the ability to do what?
Divide indefinitely to create more stem cells
Or
Give rise to a specialised cell
Totipotent ?
A stem cell able to create any of the types of cells necessary for embryonic development.
Pluripotent ?
Stem cells that can create nearly but not all the cells necessary for foetal development.
Multi potent cells
give rise to cells that have particular function. For example blood stem cells will give rise to red blood cells.
What Are the primary germ layers
Ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm
What are the sources of stem cells??
- Umbilical cord blood and placental stem cells
- embryonic stem cells
- adult stem cells
Embryonic stem cells??
Are present in 3-5 day Old embryos
Adult stem cells -
Occur in the adult tissues- bone marrow, muscle and brain
What is a zygote ?
Is the single cell that results from the fertilisation of an egg by a sperm
