morphology
Multiple petechiae are the most common finding - present on thymus, visceral and parietal pleura, and epicardium
Congested lungs w/ vascular engorgement w/ or w/o pulmonary edema
CNS - astrogliosis of the brainstem and cerebellum Hypoplasia of the arcuate nucleus or decrease in brain stem neuronal populations
pathogenesis
males and those who died of SIDS are at greater risk
immediate prior history of mild respiratory tract infection
