Ch 10 Flashcards
Two small muscles in the ME dampen the vibrations of the tympanic membrane and the ossicular chain
the tensor tympani and stapedius muscle
To open the eustachian tube which two muscles must contract?
tensor veli palatini and levator veli palatini
Air conduction causes the ossicles to move where bone conduction causes the full bones to vibrate in response to sound waves. However, the both cause
movements in the inner ear fluids which causes the hair cells to be displaced
What is a conductive HL?
Its in the ME
BC is normal
AC not normal
What is Sensorineural HL?
Inner ear damage hair cell damage that is permanent The higher F are affected BC not normal AC not normal
What is a mixed HL?
ME and inner ear is damaged
Air and bone conduction are not normal
BUT bone conduction is better
Myringoplasty is a surgical procedure where
the perforated tympanic membrane is surgically repaired
What is a myringotomy
small incisions are made in the tympanic membrane to relieve the pressure
What is otosclerosis
spongy growth starts on the footplate of the stapes
What is carharts notch?
reduced BC sensitivity at 2k Hz
Noise induced HL
tends to be worst from 3k to 6K but its usually 4k you would see the “notch”
what is presbycusis
hearing impairment in older people due to the effect of aging associated with sensorineural HL
affect high frequency and would see a sloping in the audiogram
CH with CAPD can be described with three components
- direct intervention aimed to improve auditory skills
- teach compensatory strategies
- notification of the environment to minimize adverse learning conditions
what is threshold?
an intensity level at which a tone is faintly heard at least 50% of the time it is presented
pure tone hearing is to determine the threshold
speech reception threshold is 50% of the words presented is understood
