Ch 1-2 Flashcards
What is Proteomics?
Study of all the proteins of an organism
Where do homeostatic changes occur for most cells?
ECF
In maintaining homeostasis our bodies don’t maintain an equilibrium but instead a __________
Dynamic steady state
What is the desired unit for mass flow?
Mass/time
Usually g/min
What are the relative concentrations of Na+ and K+ in ICF and ECF?
ECF has high Na+ and low K+
ICF has low Na+ and high K+
What is the difference between a local control system and a reflex control system?
A reflex control system sends measurement to and receives signals from a control center (i.e. the CNS)
A local control system is a tissue with an internal control system
Is a response loop used in a local control system or a reflex control system?
Reflex control system. It is a long distance pathway that uses the nervous and/or endocrine systems.
What does feedforward control do? What is the example given?
Anticipates change. Like your arms popping out when you trip, even though you didn’t fall
Our body does not usually maintain homeostasis at a constant set-point, but instead ______
Oscillates around the set point.
What is the example of a positive feedback loop given in class?
Childbirth. We don’t know the original stimulus, but we see the oxytocin release causing contractions, pushing the baby against the cervix, releasing more oxytocin
Hydrophilic is Lipo______
Hydrophobic is Lipo____
Hydrophilic is Lipophobic
Hydrophobic is lipophilic
What is the difference between molarity and molality?
Molarity
1 mole + x water = 1 Liter 1M solution
Molality
1 Liter water + 1 mole = x amount Molality
What are equivalents (unit)?
Molarity x number of charges on ion
1 mole Ca2+ ions is 2eq
1mMole Ca2+ ions is 2meq
What are equivalents (unit)?
Molarity x number of charges on ion
1 mole Ca2+ ions is 2eq
1mMole Ca2+ ions is 2meq
How much agarose do you need to make 250 mls of a 2.5% solution?
250ml x 1g/ml x 0.025 = 6.25g
Why does the concentration of H+ ions merit its own system of measurement?
H+ ions are critical to shape and function of molecules (like proteins)
What is the pH of pure H20?
10E-7M = pH7
What is the pH range that is compatible with life?
Upper limit 7.7
Lower limit 7.0
What is the ideal pH of human blood? What is the range?
Ideal if 7.4
Range is 7.38-7.42
