Ch 1 Flashcards
Dorsal Body Cavity
contains the Cranial cavity and Vertebral cavity
Thoracic Cavity
contains the heart and lungs. is airtight. Lungs have their own pleural cavities and the heart is in the bottom mediastinum cavity (there’s 2).
Abdominal Cavity
contains digestive viscera
Pelvic Cavity
contains the urinary bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum
Cranial cavity
formed by cranial bones, contains and protects the brain
Vertebral canal

Meninges
layers of protective tissue that line the cranial cavity and vertebral canal
Abdominopelvic Cavity
since there is no separation between these two cavities, sometimes referred to as one cavity.
Diaphragm
separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities
Mucous membranes
lines cavities that are open to the outside environment. The cells secrete mucous. Found in the oral and nasal cavities, vagina, and anus.
Serous Membranes
Lines cavities that are closed to the outside environment, Cells secrete serous fluid (very slippery). Has 2 layers: visceral (touches organ) and parietal (touches body wall). Found in thoracic and abdominal cavities.
Body membranes
keep organs compartmentalized and prevents infections from spreading.
Pleura
serosae associated with the lungs
Pericardium
Serosae associated with the heart.
Peritoneum
Serosae associated with the abdominal viscera
