Spurlings test
Rest elbows on shoulders
Apply force down
E + comp (don’t continue if pain)
E + R to unaffected side + comp
E + R to affected side + comp
What does it test - Spurlings
Local sprain/strain, joint damage, facet irritation, cervical sublux
+Ve test - Spurlings
Radicular P and/or altered sensation in dermatomal distribution
Local neck pain- not +ve
Jackson’s compression
Pt rotate head to one side
Apply force down on head
Repeat with head rotated to other side
What does it test - Jackson’s compression test
Increased pressure on nerve roots (DJD, osteophytes, radiculopathy)
+Ve - compression test
Peripheral P and/or altered sensation (radiation down arm- dermatomal)
Distraction
Cup chin, support occiput Lift head
What does it test for - distraction
Muscle, ligament, or capsule
Increased pressure on nerve roots
Facet irritation, DJD
+ve - distraction
Relief of symptoms
