Cervical Cancer Flashcards
What must have occurred for HPV infection to establish?
Pre-existing injury
How does the epithelium appear in condyloma?
The squamous epithelium becomes significantly thickened
What proportion of the epithelium demonstrates cytological atypica in CIN2?
Two thirds
What type of cells does HPV preferentially infect?
Squamous epithelium
What percentage of cervical cancers are caused by HPV?
100%
What do HPV early genes encode for?
Replicative proteins
What type of virus is human papillomavirus?
dsDNA
Which type of tumour demonstrates picket fencing in punch biopsies?
Adenocarcinoma in situ
Which strains of HPV account for the majority of cancers?
16 and 18
How does HPV protein promote tumour development?
E6 from HPV binds to p53 to prevent it functioning as a tumour suppressor gene
What percentage of HPV infections results in a persistent viral infection?
10-20%
What do HPV late genes encode for?
Capsid proteins
What type of epithelium does HPV preferentially infect?
Metaplastic squamous epithelium
Describe the histological appearance of CIN1
CIN1 (or cervical intrapepithelial neoplasia 1) is characterised by the presence of mild nuclear atypia and disorganisation of cells in the lower third of the stratified squamous epithelium
There are also often koilocytes in the upper epithelium.
