Cerebral Cortex and circle of willis Flashcards
What is the name for the deep grooves in the cerebral Cortex?
Fissures
List the 3 fissures which separate the lobes in each hemisphere of the brain
Central sulcus, lateral sulcus, parieto-occipital sulcus
What is the term for the up and down corrugations in the cerebral Cortex?
Up gyrus (gyri), down sulcus (sulci)
What is the structure which separates but also connects the two hemispheres of the brain?
Corpus callosum
Cerebral Cortex consists of grey matter (around the periphery of the cortex) and white matter (more in the middle) - what are the different components of white and grey matter?
White matter = axons of neurons
Grey matter = cell bodies
What are the 4 lobes present in each hemisphere of the brain?
Parietal
Occipital
Frontal
Temporal
Main function of frontal lobe
Motor
Main function of parietal lobe
Sensory
Main function of occipital lobe
Vision
Main function of Temporal lobe
Auditory
Motor areas of frontal lobe, list them and their functions
Primary motor Cortex- initiates movement
Association motor area - remembers, helps us to remember and repeat patterns, information stored re movements
What is broca’s area?
Part of the motor area responsible for speech- it’s present in 1 hemisphere only - usually in the left hemisphere for right handed people and vice versa
List 3 somatic sensations
Pain, temperature, touch
What is the function of the primary sensory cortex?
Receives the 3 somatic sensations
What is the function of the sensory association area?
Processes and stores knowledge of senses, memory of sensation
