Bone and Tissue Flashcards
What are the 6 key functions of bones
- Mineral homeostasis
- Blood cell production
- Gives shape and structure
- Protects
- Storage of energy (lipids)
- Movement
What are the 2 types of bone tissue?
Compact and cancellous (spongy)
What are 4 key components of bone
- Lamellae- forms bone matrix
- Osteocytes - cells
- Osteoclasts - remove bone matrix
- Osteoblasts - replace bone matrix
What are the 5 types of bone?
Flat, long,short, irregular sesamoid
What is a sesamoid bone
A bone which forms within a tendon, e.g patella
What is the long shift of a long bone known as?
Diaphysis
What are the ends of long bones known as, often with cancellous bone inside?
Epiphysis
What is the tissue which covers articulating surfaces of bones called
Articular cartilage
What is inside the medullary cavity in the diaphysis
Red and yellow marrow
What is the thin fibrous Sheath surrounding long bones called?
Periosteum
What attaches to the periosteum
Fibres of ligaments, tendons amd joint capsules
What are the 4 main types of tissue
Connective, epithelial, muscle, nervous
What’s the 2 types of epithelial tissue
Simple and stratified
Functions of epithelial tissue?
Line organs, protect
List 6 types of Connective tissue
Blood, bone, loose Connective tissue, adipose, cartilage, dense
